Paraa Safari Lodge is one of the oldest safari lodges in Uganda and arguably the most historically significant property in Murchison Falls National Park.
Local legend insists that the English explorer Sir Samuel Baker once slept on this very ground, and whether or not that particular claim survives close historical scrutiny, the lodge’s age and character are entirely real.
Paraa sits inside the park itself, elevated above the river with sweeping views across both the water and the surrounding savannah, and its position near the Paraa ferry crossing makes it one of the most strategically convenient bases for exploring Murchison Falls in either direction, north into the productive game tracks or south toward the falls themselves.
Rooms and Accommodation at Paraa Safari Lodge
Paraa offers 54 rooms across a genuinely wide range of categories, making it one of the largest single lodges in the entire park.
Standard rooms, arranged in a two-story motel-style block on either side of the main building, come in single, double, and twin configurations, each with a private balcony or patio overlooking the pool and the river beyond.
Every room includes an en suite bathroom with hot and cold running water, comfortable beds dressed in mosquito netting, ceiling fans, and the simple but genuinely comfortable furnishings that have defined the property’s character for decades.
Guests wanting more space can choose one of the lodge’s suites, which add a separate living room with comfortable sofas and a minibar to the standard room layout, or the larger Queen’s Cottage, a two-bedroom unit with its own living and dining area that suits families or small groups traveling together.
For travelers who want a touch of canvas authenticity without sacrificing the lodge’s facilities, Paraa also offers a small number of safari tents positioned a short walk from the main building.
The Pool, the Bars, and Paraa’s Social Heart
The lodge’s free-form swimming pool, complete with a swim-up bar, is one of its most celebrated features and the place most returning guests describe first when asked about Paraa. Sun loungers and umbrellas surround the water, and a separate wading section keeps younger guests entertained while parents relax nearby.
This is, notably, the same stretch of Nile that featured in the filming of the 1951 classic The African Queen, and sipping a cocktail at the pool’s edge with that cinematic history in mind adds a particular satisfaction to an afternoon off from game drives.
The Explorer’s Bar in the main lodge building carries the property’s classic safari atmosphere into the evening, with a fireplace that becomes genuinely welcome during Murchison’s cool nights, while the poolside bar handles daytime drink orders for guests who never want to leave their lounger.
On select evenings, particularly over weekends, Paraa arranges barbecues on the lawn accompanied by cultural dancers from nearby villages, turning dinner into a proper celebration of local performance and tradition.
Dining at the Captain’s Table
Paraa’s main restaurant, the Captain’s Table, occupies the top floor of the lodge with sweeping views over the river and serves buffet-style meals combining international dishes with Ugandan specialties, including reliable vegetarian options for travelers with dietary requirements.
Guests can request meals served poolside, including wood-fired pizzas and casual snacks, or dine on the balcony for a quieter setting away from the main restaurant’s energy.
Activities
Paraa’s location close to the Paraa ferry crossing makes it the natural starting point for the two activities that define a Murchison Falls visit: the boat cruise to the base of the falls and the game drives across the Buligi tracks in the northern sector.
The motorboat safari up the Victoria Nile is a three-hour round trip that delivers close encounters with hippos, crocodiles, buffalo, Rothschild’s giraffes, elephants, and lions along the riverbanks, building toward the moment the boat approaches the base of the falls itself and the roar of the Nile forcing through its narrow gorge becomes a physical sensation rather than simply a sound.
A separate three-hour boat trip runs downstream toward the Nile Delta and Lake Albert, where birders have their best chance anywhere in the park of spotting the elusive shoebill stork among the papyrus-endemic species that favor this particular stretch of wetland.

Paraa Safari Lodge
Game drives from Paraa access the Buligi circuit, consistently the most productive game viewing area in Murchison, where lions, elephants, giraffes, buffalo, and the rare aquatic sitatunga antelope are all genuine possibilities depending on the morning.
For guests wanting something beyond the standard program, Paraa can arrange chimpanzee tracking in the Kaniyo Pabidi section of Budongo Forest, river fishing trips targeting the famous Nile perch, hot air balloon safaris over the savannah at sunrise or sunset, and visits to local communities to interact with native tribes and learn about traditions that predate the lodge itself by generations.
Wildlife at Your Doorstep
Even guests who choose to spend an afternoon entirely at the lodge often find that Murchison’s wildlife comes to them.
Ugandan kob, waterbuck, buffalo, and various monkey species are regularly spotted from the lodge grounds, and the surrounding gardens attract a steady stream of the over 451 recorded bird species that make this park one of the finest birding destinations in East Africa.
Several guests reviewing their stays specifically mention elephants, warthogs, and hippos wandering through the garden in the evening, a detail that turns even a quiet evening at Paraa into an unplanned wildlife encounter.
Getting to Paraa Safari Lodge
Paraa sits approximately 305 kilometers from Kampala, a five-hour drive via Masindi, Kichumbanyobo Gate, and Mubako Gate. Travelers approaching from the escarpment route through Buliisa and Wanseko have an alternative, more adventurous road option with dramatic Rift Valley views.
For guests wanting to skip the road journey entirely, the nearest airstrip at Bugungu is roughly a twenty-five-minute drive from the lodge, with regular charter flight connections from Entebbe International Airport, and the lodge can also arrange helicopter transfers for travelers seeking the fastest possible connection.
